The 2018 Australian Chestnut Season has started! Not only a tasty treat, the chestnut is low in fat, high in dietary fibre, free from gluten & cholesterol, & low in sodium & calories, while being rich in mineral salts & a good source of Vitamin C, & B vitamins, including B1, B2 & folate.
You can roast, grill, boil or even microwave them, but nothing beats fresh chestnuts roasted over an open flame. We have 27cm and 30cm Roaster Pans in stock, suitable for open fire or bbq, as well as Chestnut Cutters. We also stock Electric Pizza Ovens that are also ideal for roasting chestnuts.
The season for fresh Australian Chestnuts runs from March to July.

Good Beer Week
Special mention, though, for our friends at The Craft and Co, in Collingwood, who are hosting Suds for the Senses, a sensory journey matching limited edition small batch brews with an expertly paired five-course dinner, and From Brews to Booze, an evening of brewing, distilling, drinks, food, fun & learning where you’ll sample four beers in three different stages – the beer itself, the distilled spirit version and the spirit created into a cocktail.
When the weather cools down, a brown ale is the perfect brew. One of my favourites is a classic take on a popular brown ale from the Northwest United States. This recipe features our Viking Malts & White Labs WLP002:
HMI Kangaroo Drool Brown Ale (23 litre batch)
4kg Pale ale malt
125g Viking crystal 150
150g Viking chocolate malt
55g Viking black malt
20g East Kent Goldings @ 60 min
20g Liberty @ 30 min
25g Fuggles @ 15min
1/2 Whirlfloc tablet @ 10 min
Receive any White Labs yeast for half price when you buy the Kangaroo Drool recipe kit.
Dean's Brew News
Stepping into Cade's shoes, after losing our erstwhile home brewing supplies specialist to the world of professional brewing, Home Make It Reservoir has a new resident brewer:
"My name is Dean. I've been brewing, off & on, for a long time now, but in earnest for the last five years. Getting a new kit as a birthday present kickstarted a real passion. I'm an active member of the Merri Mashers Brew Club, the local home brewing collective, and a BJCP Certified Beer Judge. I love making, talking about & drinking beer, and enjoy educating anyone interested in getting into the world of brewing. There's a lot I still have to learn, but one of the best things about brewing is that you get to choose how far you go.
When I started out, there were only a few varieties of extract, & no hops or malts to play around with. Now there are dozens of tins, many different types of hops & hop products, an incredible array of yeast strains, & a huge number of malts available. Whether it's kit & kilo, partial mash, brew-in-a-bag or sophisticated all-grain brewing, we have the products you need to get you brewing."
This May, you can look forward to fresh supplies of White Labs & Yeast Bay liquid yeast, fresh wort kits, pre-packed all-grain kits, & the same friendly and helpful service you expect.
Red IPA Fresh Wort Kits will be back in store in May. Dump into a clean fermenter (no need for dilution), add your favourite yeast, and you're brewing! Dry-hopping is recommended, & we offer a range of hop pellets for you to choose from. Call ahead to check availability - these items are in demand & fly out the door!
We have limited stocks of White Labs PurePitch liquid yeast packets that have snuck past their best-before dates. Still viable, these yeasts benefit from stepping up with a starter. We are offering a two-for-one deal on all yeast beyond the marked best-before - buy one, get one free!
New ItemsAussie Smoke Bloke Cold Smoker - if you can eat it, you can smoke it! Meats, cheese, salt, even caramel - all can be made more delicious with the judicious application of smoke. Sold with 2 x 500g packs of Eco-Smoke food safe wood smoking chips, easy to read illustrated instructions, recipe booklet and guides.
Quick San no-rinse sanitiser is food safe, versatile and easy to use. It's also very cost effective, used at a rate of 1.5 ml per litre. Available in a 500 ml bottle with its very own measuring reservoir.
Some Minor Changes Around the Shop
You'll notice a few changes around the Reservoir shop, as we prepare for the coming salami season, & accommodate new stock. Don't worry, we still carry the range you are used to. If you can't find it, ask our friendly staff who will direct you to its new home.
Home Make It 's extended trading hours continue as we head towards the winter months, from 9am to 3pm every Saturday. Please note, we are not trading on Sundays.
