Fill a test cylinder with your home brew and float the alcometer inside. Gently spin the hydrometer to release it from any bubbles that may have formed on its surface. Ensure the hydrometer is floating freely, and is not touching the sides of the hydrometer tube. As alcohol is thinner than water the higher the alcohol content the further down the alcometer will float.

Take your reading where the surface of the liquid cuts the meter.
